Koku Aileleri: Çiçeksiden Oud'a

The 12 working families

The classic perfumery wheel divides scent into four broad zones — Floral, Oriental, Woody, Fresh — and then subdivides them. Modern shopping in 2026 needs a few extra additions: Oud, Gourmand, and Aquatic deserve their own labels. Here is the practical map.

1. Floral

Rose, jasmine, peony, tuberose, lily. Romantic, sometimes opulent. Best examples: Chanel No. 5, Dior J'adore, Lancôme La Vie Est Belle.

2. Citrus

Bergamot, lemon, mandarin, neroli. Bright, energetic openings. Best for morning and hot weather. Examples: Acqua di Parma Colonia, Dior Eau Sauvage.

3. Fruity

Peach, blackcurrant, apple, pomegranate. Often a sweet shoulder to a floral heart. Examples: DKNY Be Delicious, Dior Hypnotic Poison.

4. Aquatic

Calone, sea-salt, ocean breeze accords. Modern, summery. Examples: Davidoff Cool Water, Acqua di Giò.

5. Fresh / Green

Cut grass, basil, mint, fig leaf. Clean and natural. Examples: Diptyque Philosykos, Chanel Cristalle.

6. Aromatic

Lavender, rosemary, sage, thyme. Crisp, traditionally masculine. Examples: Jean Paul Gaultier Le Mâle, Caron Pour un Homme.

7. Spicy

Pink pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, clove, saffron. Warmth and edge. Examples: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Initio Side Effect.

8. Woody

Sandalwood, cedar, vetiver. Grounded, often dry. Examples: Bois d'Argent, Le Labo Santal 33.

9. Leather

Suede, smoke, birch tar. Dark and confident. Examples: Tom Ford Tuscan Leather, Bvlgari Black.

10. Oriental / Amber

Vanilla, benzoin, labdanum, resins. Rich and sweet. Examples: YSL Opium, Guerlain Shalimar.

11. Oud

The resin of the agarwood tree. Smoky, animalic, deeply Middle-Eastern. Examples: Amouage Interlude Man, Roja Amber Oud.

12. Gourmand

Sugar, chocolate, caramel, almond, coffee. Edible, modern. Examples: Thierry Mugler Angel, Kayali Vanilla 28.

How to use this map

When you find a perfume you love, look up its top three notes on a reference site. You will see a pattern across your favourites — almost always one or two families that dominate. That pattern is your signature profile, and every new bottle worth buying should sit close to it.
